Metal Bond Diamond For Soft Concrete / One Segment
Yellow bond is designed for soft concrete (Mohs Scale 2–3)
Use single segment tools for lighter machines (under 30″) and when a more aggressive cut is required. Use double segment tools for heavier machines (30″ and above).
Because smaller machines are lighter, concentrating the available machine weight onto a single segment increases cutting efficiency and helps maintain a consistent removal rate on concrete.
A typical grinding progression:
- 30 grit for opening the slab and initial material removal
- 70 grit for refining the scratch pattern
- 120 grit for final metal grinding before transitioning to ceramic, copper or resin tools
Using single segment tools throughout the metal grinding stages provides predictable cutting performance, controlled wear, and uniform surface results.
Starting Grit Selection by Aggregate Exposure
To expose medium to large aggregate, start with 30 grit metal tools or bush hammers for faster material removal. For small to medium aggregate, begin with 70 grit metal tools. To achieve a salt and pepper finish, start with 120 grit metal tools.
Bond Selection Guidance
Always select the correct bond based on the hardness of the concrete. Using the wrong bond can lead to diamond glazing, premature tool wear, or excessive surface scratching. The Mohs Hardness Scratch Test Kit can be used to determine concrete hardness before selecting the appropriate tool bond.
