Honing & Polishing FAQs

Can I restore the shine on marble, limestone, travertine or terrazzo?

Yes. Marble, limestone, travertine and terrazzo can often be restored using suitable polishing powders or polishing creams.

For calcium-based stones, products such as A2 MIX, A3 YELLOW and ALPHA GLOSS can be used to help restore clarity, depth and shine.

If the surface is scratched, etched, worn or has lost clarity, it may need to be re-polished through the correct diamond grit sequence before using a final polishing powder or cream.

What product should I use for final polishing on stone floors?

For marble, limestone, travertine and terrazzo floors, final polishing is usually carried out after the surface has been re-polished through the correct diamond grit sequence.

If the floor is scratched, etched, worn or has lost clarity, it may need to be cut back and repolished up to around 800, 1500 or 1800 grit before using a final polishing powder or cream to bring out the shine.

For the final polishing stage, products such as A2 MIX, A3 YELLOW and ALPHA GLOSS can be used, depending on the stone type and working method.

A2 MIX and A3 YELLOW are polishing powders for calcium-based stones such as marble, limestone, travertine and marble agglomerates. ALPHA GLOSS is a polishing cream for fast gloss enhancement on natural stone including marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo, granite and agglomerates.

These products are normally used with a white pad and a suitable slow speed rotary machine. As general guidance, around 150 to 180 rpm.

What is ABR 600 used for?

ABR 600 is a micro abrasive honing cream used to create a smooth, uniform honed finish on natural stone and selected hard surfaces.

On natural stone, ABR 600 is used for honing. It helps produce an even matt, satin or delicately honed finish with a soft natural sheen, depending on the material, pad and application method. It is not a high-gloss polishing product.

How can I restore shine and colour depth on granite?

Granite is a very hard stone, which means it can be difficult to re-polish with diamond tools using rotary machines or hand polishers.

STAR SHINE is a great option for bringing back depth of colour and shine on granite surfaces without cutting back using diamond tools

On darker granite, STAR SHINE can also be used with added pigment to help enrich the colour and improve the depth of the finish.

After using STAR SHINE, TCB 12 can be used for the final pop of shine and to help even out the finish.

Once polished, we recommend sealing the surface with DEEP ENHANCER.

On granite worktops we reccomend using STAR SHINE EASY.

Can I polish quartz surfaces?

Yes, but quartz needs products suitable for compact engineered surfaces.

For quartz, use STAR SHINE EASY with TCB 12. These products are suitable for hard compact surfaces such as quartz, porcelain and ceramic.

Always test first, especially on worktops, decorative quartz surfaces or areas where the finish may vary.

Can polished porcelain tiles be restored?

Yes. Dull, cloudy or lightly scratched polished porcelain can often be improved using Porcelain Restoration Cream.

Porcelain Restoration Cream is designed for polished porcelain, glazed polished porcelain, glazed surfaces and stainless steel. It helps improve clarity, reduce surface dullness and restore a more even finish.

What should I use for porous or textured porcelain that is difficult to maintain?

For porous or textured porcelain that holds dirt and becomes difficult to maintain, ABR 600 can be used to smooth and refine the surface.

After this stage, STAR SHINE EASY can help reduce surface porosity, improve the appearance and make the tiles easier to maintain.

Always test first to confirm the finish, especially on textured, structured or anti-slip porcelain.

Can stainless steel plinths and trims be restored?

Yes. ABR 600 can be used as a problem-solving product for stained or tired stainless steel surfaces, including stainless steel plinths, trims, panels and kick plates.

When used correctly, it can help remove staining, dull marks and surface discolouration and bring the stainless steel close to its original appearance, depending on the level of damage and wear.

Always test first in a small, inconspicuous area prior to full application to confirm suitability and finish.

Can DIY users use these products?

Some products can be used by experienced DIY users, but results depend on the surface, machine, pad, product choice and technique. For floors, most polishing products work best with a white pad and suitable slow speed rotary machine or hand polisher on worktops

If you are unsure, contact AK Surface Solutions before ordering and we can advise which product is most suitable for your surface.

Should I seal stone after polishing?

Many natural stones benefit from sealing after polishing, especially marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo and other absorbent materials.

Once the surface is clean, dry and polished, a suitable stone sealer can help reduce staining and make ongoing maintenance easier.
