Professional Stone Sealers and Protection Treatments
AK Surface Solutions supplies professional stone sealers, impregnating protectors, stain protection treatments, colour enhancers and wax finishes for natural stone, terracotta, terrazzo, concrete, brick, block paving and other porous mineral surfaces.
The correct sealer depends on the material, absorbency, location and finish required. Some surfaces need an invisible water repellent impregnator, while others need extra stain protection, colour enhancement or a wax finish.
Stone Sealer FAQs and Practical Guides
Do you recommend double sealing natural stone?
Yes. For the best protection, we recommend a two stage sealing system. First, apply a water repellent impregnating sealer to reduce water absorption and moisture ingress. Then apply a second stain protection treatment to improve resistance against staining and everyday spillages.
Which impregnating sealer should I use first?
- Medium to highly absorbent natural stone: HIDRO PROTECTOR MM is a water based impregnating sealer that will help protect against stains, moisture ingress and rising damp without changing the look of the stone.
- Polished or low absorbency natural stone: HIDRO SST is normally recommended for denser stone where the sealer needs to dry without leaving unwanted residue on the surface.
- High traffic porous stone: PROTEX WB is a very good option where porous stone needs stronger protection in higher traffic areas.
- Terracotta, brick, block paving and porous mineral surfaces: AC 300 is suitable for terracotta, cotto, brick, block paving, driveways and other porous mineral surfaces.
Can HIDRO PROTECTOR MM be used outside?
Yes. HIDRO PROTECTOR MM is very effective on absorbent outdoor stone such as sandstone patios, limestone paving and other porous external natural stone surfaces.
It will help reduce water absorption, moisture ingress and staining without changing the appearance of the stone. On outdoor absorbent stone, it will also help reduce the penetration of organic growth, black algae and environmental contamination into the surface.
The surface should be cleaned first and allowed to dry properly before application. HIDRO PROTECTOR MM does not replace normal cleaning or maintenance, but it will help protect the stone and make future cleaning easier.
Why use HIDRO PROTECTOR MM before installing marble, limestone or travertine?
For absorbent marble, limestone and travertine, we recommend HIDRO PROTECTOR MM before installation because it is designed for natural stone and calcite based materials. It penetrates into the stone, reduces water absorption, moisture ingress and rising damp, and does not normally change the appearance of the material.
Before installation, the stone should be fully immersed in a container of HIDRO PROTECTOR MM so all sides are treated, including the face, back and edges. This gives more complete protection before the stone is fixed.
This process will help reduce reflective staining from adhesives, bedding materials and moisture. It will also help reduce staining from grout during installation.
Always test first and allow the stone to dry properly before installation.
Can AC 300 be used on block paving, driveways and brick?
Yes. AC 300 is suitable for absorbent porous materials such as terracotta, cotto, brick, block paving, driveways and other porous mineral surfaces.
It is a water based impregnating treatment that reduces absorption and protects the surface without forming a heavy surface coating. It is especially useful where the material is porous and needs water repellency or additional protection.
What should I use as the second protection treatment?
- Natural look stain protection: HIDRO 150 is a water based stain protection treatment that helps maintain a natural appearance. It is especially suitable for honed or more absorbent natural stone surfaces.
- Natural look Solvent based stain protection: B1/700 is a solvent based stain protection treatment for suitable natural stone surfaces, especially dense or polished stone where deeper penetration is required.
- Colour enhancement: use DEEP ENHANCER, WET LOOK ECO or P147 PLUS, depending on the material absorbency.
- Wax finish: use HIDROFAB for a polished finish, HIDROFAB AR for a satin finish or HIDROFAB MATT for a matt finish.
Which sealer should I use if I do not want to change the look of the stone?
For a natural finish, use a natural look impregnator or stain protection product. HIDRO PROTECTOR MM is a good choice for medium to highly absorbent stone. For dense stone, use HIDRO SST. For extra natural look stain protection, use HIDRO 150 on honed or more absorbent stone, or B1/700 on dense or polished stone where suitable.
Which products give a colour enhanced or wet look finish?
For colour enhancement, use DEEP ENHANCER, WET LOOK ECO or P147 PLUS. DEEP ENHANCER is recommended for polished or dense stone surfaces. WET LOOK ECO is a water based enhancer for absorbent to medium absorbency stone. P147 PLUS is a solvent based enhancer for medium to high absorbency stone. With all enhancers, remove all excess product from the surface. Any residue left to dry can create uneven marks, stickiness or unwanted shine.
How should water based sealers be applied?
Water based products such as HIDRO PROTECTOR MM, HIDRO SST, HIDRO 150 and WET LOOK ECO are often applied with a pump up sprayer and spread evenly with a flat mop.
For small areas, edges or DIY projects, apply with a brush and buff off with a clean microfibre cloth. For professional work, buff with a white pad on a rotary machine where suitable.
Always remove excess product and do not allow puddles or uneven residue to dry on the surface.
How should solvent based sealers and enhancers be applied?
Solvent based products such as B1/700, DEEP ENHANCER and P147 PLUS are applied with a T bar, lambswool applicator or suitable brush.
After application, buff the surface with a white pad on a rotary machine or buff dry by hand with a clean microfibre cloth. Removing all excess product is essential for an even finish.
Should the surface be cleaned before sealing?
Yes. Before sealing, the surface must be clean, dry and free from grease, old residues, waxes, stains and contamination. For preparation cleaning, view our professional cleaning products. For oil, rust or organic staining, use our stain removal products first.
