Typical Grinding Progression
- 30 grit – opening the slab and initial material removal
- 70 grit – refining the scratch pattern
- 120 grit – final metal grinding before transitioning to ceramic, copper, or resin tools
Starting Grit Selection by Aggregate Exposure
- Medium to large aggregate: start with 30 grit metal tools or bush hammers
- Small to medium aggregate: start with 70 grit metal tools
- Salt and pepper finish: start with 120 grit metal tools
Selecting the correct bond based on concrete hardness is critical. The Grey bond is designed specifically for medium concrete and delivers stable cutting performance with controlled wear. Using the wrong bond can result in diamond glazing, premature tool wear, or excessive surface scratching. The Mohs Hardness Scratch Test Kit can be used to determine concrete hardness before selecting the appropriate tool bond.
