Choosing the right protection

The correct sealer depends on the surface and the finish required

The correct sealer depends on the material, absorbency, location and finish required. Some surfaces need an invisible water repellent impregnator, while others need extra stain protection, colour enhancement or a wax finish.

Before selecting a treatment, identify whether the material is highly absorbent, medium absorbency, dense or polished. You should also establish whether the surface is indoors or outdoors and whether the finished appearance should remain natural or become colour enhanced.

Recommended protection system

Why we recommend double sealing natural stone

For the best protection, we recommend a two-stage sealing system for suitable natural stone surfaces.

Stage One

Apply a water repellent impregnating sealer

First, apply a water repellent impregnating sealer to reduce water absorption and moisture ingress. The treatment should be selected according to the density and absorbency of the stone.

HIDRO PROTECTOR MM HIDRO SST PROTEX WB AC 300
Stage Two

Add stain protection or the required final finish

Then apply a second stain protection treatment to improve resistance against staining and everyday spillages. Depending on the result required, the second treatment may provide a natural finish, colour enhancement or a polished, satin or matt wax finish.

Second protection treatment

Select the finish and level of stain protection required

After applying the appropriate impregnating sealer, select a second treatment according to the appearance and additional protection required.

Outdoor protection and pre-installation treatment

Using HIDRO PROTECTOR MM outside

HIDRO PROTECTOR MM is very effective on absorbent outdoor stone such as sandstone patios, limestone paving and other porous external natural stone surfaces.

It will help reduce water absorption, moisture ingress and staining without changing the appearance of the stone. On outdoor absorbent stone, it will also help reduce the penetration of organic growth, black algae and environmental contamination into the surface.

The surface should be cleaned first and allowed to dry properly before application. HIDRO PROTECTOR MM does not replace normal cleaning or maintenance, but it will help protect the stone and make future cleaning easier.

Treating marble, limestone or travertine before installation

For absorbent marble, limestone and travertine, we recommend HIDRO PROTECTOR MM before installation because it is designed for natural stone and calcite-based materials.

It penetrates into the stone, reduces water absorption, moisture ingress and rising damp, and does not normally change the appearance of the material.

Before installation, the stone should be fully immersed in a container of HIDRO PROTECTOR MM so all sides are treated, including the face, back and edges. This gives more complete protection before the stone is fixed.

This process will help reduce reflective staining from adhesives, bedding materials and moisture. It will also help reduce staining from grout during installation. Always test first and allow the stone to dry properly before installation.

Application guidance

How to apply water-based and solvent-based treatments

Correct application and complete removal of excess product are essential for an even finish.

Water-based sealers

Pump-up sprayer, flat mop, brush or microfibre cloth

Water-based products such as HIDRO PROTECTOR MM, HIDRO SST, HIDRO 150 and WET LOOK ECO are often applied with a pump-up sprayer and spread evenly with a flat mop.

  1. Make sure the surface is clean and properly dry.
  2. Apply the treatment evenly with a pump-up sprayer, flat mop or suitable brush.
  3. For small areas, edges or DIY projects, use a brush.
  4. Buff off with a clean microfibre cloth.
  5. For professional work, buff with a white pad on a rotary machine where suitable.
  6. Remove all excess product and do not allow puddles or uneven residue to dry.
Solvent-based sealers

T-bar, lambswool applicator or suitable brush

Solvent-based products such as B1/700, DEEP ENHANCER and P147 PLUS are applied with a T-bar, lambswool applicator or suitable brush.

  1. Confirm that the surface is clean and completely dry.
  2. Apply evenly with a T-bar, lambswool applicator or suitable brush.
  3. Allow the product to penetrate according to its application instructions.
  4. Buff with a white pad on a rotary machine or buff dry by hand with a clean microfibre cloth.
  5. Remove all excess product to achieve an even finish.

Clean and prepare the surface before sealing

Before sealing, the surface must be clean, dry and free from grease, old residues, waxes, stains and contamination. For preparation cleaning, view our professional cleaning products. For oil, rust or organic staining, use our stain removal products first.

Stone Sealer FAQs

Use these practical answers to understand the recommended protection sequence, product types and application methods. Always review the individual product instructions and test the selected treatment before full application.

Yes. For the best protection, we recommend a two-stage sealing system. First, apply a water repellent impregnating sealer to reduce water absorption and moisture ingress. Then apply a second stain protection treatment to improve resistance against staining and everyday spillages.

  • Medium to highly absorbent natural stone: HIDRO PROTECTOR MM is a water-based impregnating sealer that will help protect against stains, moisture ingress and rising damp without changing the look of the stone.
  • Polished or low absorbency natural stone: HIDRO SST is normally recommended for denser stone where the sealer needs to dry without leaving unwanted residue on the surface.
  • High-traffic porous stone: PROTEX WB is a very good option where porous stone needs stronger protection in higher-traffic areas.
  • Terracotta, brick, block paving and porous mineral surfaces: AC 300 is suitable for terracotta, cotto, brick, block paving, driveways and other porous mineral surfaces.
